AI does not replace understanding

AI can make code look finished. That does not mean the person using it understands what it does.

AI tools can generate code that looks right. Clean. Structured. Confident. Most of the time, it even works. But something about it can still be off.

Looking correct is not the same as being correct.

The pattern behind AI-generated code

This feels similar to how people used StackOverflow before.

Copy. Paste. Move on.

The code worked. Sometimes.

But a lot of people didn’t really know why it worked, what assumptions it made, or where it would break.

Now it’s the same thing. Just faster. And more convincing.

The output looks clean. Structured. Confident.

That confidence is the problem.

You can’t tell from the shape of the code whether the person using it actually understands it.

Most problems don’t show up in the obvious places.

Where it works

I use it myself for language JSONs, small utilities, repetitive tasks, and quick scaffolding. It saves time, and that matters.

It is also a good thing that people without coding experience can build more than they could before.

Lowering the barrier is not the problem.

For many cases, this is completely fine. Not every script is a security boundary. Not every prototype needs deep architecture.

Where it breaks

It changes when the system actually matters.

Security. Trust. Sensitive data. Payment flows. Permissions. Authentication. Backups. Deletion.

Anything where “it probably works” is not enough.

These are the cases where understanding is not optional.

AI does not remove that requirement. It just makes it easier to ignore.

The real problem

The issue is not that people use AI.

The issue is that the output looks finished.

Like it does not need questioning.

Uncertainty gets hidden behind structure.

  • A clean function can still miss the edge case.
  • A confident answer can still invent the wrong API.
  • A secure-looking flow can still leak data in the boring path nobody checked.

That is where it gets risky.

Closing

AI is a good tool. But it does not replace understanding.

It just makes it easier to skip it.
